Today, we board Japan’s smallest sleeper room on the legendary Sunrise Express, traveling through the heart of winter Japan.
This round-trip journey takes us from Tokyo to Izumo and back, covering nearly 1,900 km in about 24 hours, all aboard Japan’s last daily overnight sleeper train.

Along the way, we experience snowy landscapes, bento dinners, station sushi, strange winter drinks, sleepless nights, and a quiet pilgrimage to Izumo Taisha, one of Japan’s most sacred shrines.
Upper berth vs lower berth, snow vs no snow, comfort vs shoulder pain — everything is tested on this winter ritual. This is not just a train ride. It’s a yearly tradition.
