The United States Naval Academy’s annual Herndon Monument Climb for first-year midshipmen took place on May 14, 2025.

First-year students (or “plebes”) attempt to climb a 21-foot (6.4-meter) obelisk that is traditionally coated in vegetable shortening or lard to make the ascent more challenging. Their goal is to retrieve the white “Dixie cup” hat worn by plebes during the summer from the top and replace it with an upperclassman’s cover.
