The Mitsubishi F-2 is a multirole fighter aircraft based on the General Dynamics F-16C Block 40. A total of 98 units were jointly produced for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Lockheed Martin, with production responsibilities split 60/40 between Japan and the United States.
Compared to the base F-16, the F-2 incorporates over 95% design modifications, including a 25% increase in wing area, the use of carbon fiber reinforced composite materials, and the world’s first operational deployment of an AESA radar on a fighter aircraft.
