The U.S. Military's Aircraft Arresting System (AAS) includes the fixed BAK-12 (Air Force) and E-28 (Navy/Marine Corps), and the mobile MAAS (Air Force) and M-31 (Marine Corps).

The AAS utilizes the arresting hooks attached to the tail of an fighter aircraft to safely decelerate and stop the aircraft in the event of an emergency.
