PROTESTERS RALLIED ONCE AGAIN IN HONG KONG TODAY. CITY-WIDE CHAOS STARTED FROM MORNING RUSH HOUR WHEN POLICE FIRED LIVE ROUNDS AT A PROTESTER. THE HOSPITAL AUTHORITY CONFIRMED THE YOUNG MAN SHOT AT CLOSE RANGE HAS UNDERGONE SURGERY AND REMAINS IN A CRITICAL CONDITION.

Police fired live rounds at close range at protesters in Sai Wan Ho — on the eastern side of Hong Kong island. Three shots rang out, and the young man fell to the ground. Video footage showed him lying in a pool of blood with his eyes wide open. The latest violence comes after a student died in hospital last week during an earlier protest. Police detained and arrested pro-democracy lawmakers over the weekend. Activists called a general strike and urged people to block public transport. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons. In a news conference, police defended the officer's decision, claiming he was acting in self defense. In the Central business district, office workers joined protesters on the streets to condemn police violence. It was rare for tear gas to be fired during working hours in the heart of the financial centre, lined with bank headquarters and top-brand shops. Universities cancelled classes and exams as demonstrations hit campuses around the city. Police said 266 people had been arrested since last Monday, more than 60 people were wounded on Monday. In one of her most defiant addresses, Chief Executive Carrie Lam condemned the protesters. "The action of rioters has far exceeded the call for democracy and are now people's enemy." Amnesty International Hong Kong is demanding an investigation. They said in a statement: "The live rounds fired by police are clear evidence of reckless use of force. Another policeman was seen driving at high speed into a group of protesters on a motorbike. These are not policing measures – these are officers out of control with a mindset of retaliation."
