茨城県沖の五浦海岸には奇妙な形をした岩（炭酸塩コンクリーション）が大量にあります。
この炭酸塩コンクリーションを分析の結果、天然ガスに由来していることが判明しました。

地下から湧き出た天然ガスと海水中の炭酸カルシウムが結合してできたのが、炭酸塩コンクリーションだったのです。
