「big deal」は使用頻度が高い英語表現です。「deal」は名詞で「取引」「協定」「談合」等の意味を持ちます。そのため「big」の形容詞を付けて「big deal」は「大きな取引」、言い替えれば「たいしたもん」を意味します。「big deal」が人に使われるときは「重要な人」「大物」の意味になります。

反語法的表現で「What‘s the big deal?」は直訳すると「何が重要なの？」言い替えれば「何も重要ではない」「何でもない」の意味になります。
