NASAの宇宙飛行士になる試験に毎年挑戦して失敗を8年間繰り返した後、9年目で成功した自分の話を後輩となる卒業生に話しています。一日一日の小さなことを忠実にし、夢に向かって着実に行けば最終的にその夢が叶うとの真理を彼の経験から話しています。

2014年の米国コネチカット大学の卒業講演ですが、その時彼は地球外で任務を遂行していたので宇宙船の中で祝辞を述べています。
