１２月初旬。アメリカ連邦議会の公聴会にハーバード大学をはじめ全米有数の大学の学長が呼ばれた。テーマは「大学における反ユダヤ主義への対処」。
１０月７日に、イスラム組織ハマスとイスラエルの戦闘が始まって以降、全米の大学でパレスチナ支持を訴える学生の運動が盛り上がり、ユダヤ系の学生への“嫌がらせ”行為にまで発展している。学長は行き過ぎた行為の禁止と、言論の自由を守る責務のはざまで苦闘していると、議員の前で吐露した。

全米の大学でのパレスチナ支持の運動の広がりの先陣を切ったのは、ハーバード大学だ。大学に足を運び彼らに話を聞くと、「自分たちも大いに傷ついている」と話す。いったいキャンパスで何が起こっているのか？なにが問題なのか？パレスチナ、イスラエルを支持する学生双方に思いを聞いた。

On December 5th, the presidents of three prestigious U.S. universities, including Harvard, testified before the U.S. House Representatives committee on their efforts to address antisemitism on campuses following the October 7 attack by Hamas on Israel.

Since the October 7 attack, pro-Palestine rallies have been actively taking place on campuses nationwide, transforming once-peaceful spaces into confrontational arenas where students no longer feel safe. An uptick in reported antisemitic incidents on campus led House Republicans to question the university presidents for what they perceived as inadequate responses to these incidents. While grappling with how to handle the protests, the university administrators emphasized the importance of upholding free speech.

Harvard University drew significant attention and criticism when, on October 8th, a letter signed by over 30 student groups condemning Israel for the October 7 attack was published. In an effort to understand the situation on campus post-October 7, we interviewed two students from the pro-Palestine group and two pro-Israel students at Harvard University.
