6,500万年前のあの日以来
地球では鳥を除く、すべての恐竜が姿を消しました。
そして運よく生き残ったこの恐竜(?)は
哺乳類が定着する前に
ぽっかりと空いた地球の生態的な隙間を埋めていくようになります。
6,100万年前ごろ、南半球では
ペンギンの祖先になる個体が
海に進出するようになり
ある森では現在の「ネズミドリ(鼠鳥)」の祖先である
小さな鳥(Tsidiiyazhi abini)が登場しました。
そして
肉食恐竜が抜けた穴を素早く埋めていったのは
「フォルスラコス」でした。
別名テラーバード(Terror bird)と呼ばれるフォルスラコスは
特定の種ではなく「フォルスラコス科(Phorusrhacidae)」に属する
肉食性の鳥の総称で
少なくとも20種を超え
小さいものは背丈が1メートルに過ぎない(?)個体から
なんと2~3メートルに達する
「ケレンケン(Kelenken guillermoi)」のような巨大なフォルスラコスもいました。
