約5,600万年前の暁新世末から始新世の初めまで
20万年という短い期間で
地球の平均気温が5~8℃も上昇する
歴史上、最も短くも、強力だった温暖化の時期があったのです。
いわゆる、”暁新世-始新世温暖化極大”
英語では、略して
「P.E.T.M」と呼ばれています。
この時期は、現在の地球温暖化と似た特徴を持っており
気候の変化を研究する多くの科学者たちの注目を集めています。
一体なぜ、遠い昔に、このような急激な温暖化が
起こったのでしょうか？
そして、当時の生態系には
どのような変化があったのでしょうか？
また、気温はどのようにして
再び低くなったのでしょうか？
今日は、数千万年前にあった
地球温暖化についてのお話です！
