Foreign Tourists Shocked by Tokyo's "Dangerous Heat" at Shibuya Crossing
[Shibuya, Tokyo] On August 5, as dangerously high temperatures swept across the Kanto region, many foreign tourists were seen at the famous Shibuya Scramble Crossing. When asked about Tokyo's intense heat, several expressed their surprise.
A tourist from Queensland, Australia, said, "The heat is similar to summer back home, but Tokyo feels much more humid." They were seen using a handheld fan and cooling goods to guard against heatstroke.
A tourist from Belgium was also shocked, saying, "I'm sweating all over—I must have lost about two liters by now!" She was clearly overwhelmed by the oppressive humidity.
On the same day, temperatures soared throughout the region. In Isesaki City, Gunma Prefecture, the mercury hit 41.8°C (107.2°F), breaking the national record for highest temperature ever observed. In central Tokyo (Otemachi), the temperature reached 36.6°C (97.9°F).
