Brazil’s growing deforestation: a bird’s eye view
Flying above the Amazon, acres of barren land can be seen standing in stark contrast to the surrounding jungle - a symbol of Brazil’s losing battle with illegal loggers. The country has seen a 35 percent increase in deforestation over the past four years. Grappling with a recession, Brazil has cut funding for its Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources, the group charged with protecting the rainforest. Loggers have taken advantage of the lapse in security; in 2015, 2,500 square miles (4,023 km) were cut down. The deforestation has raised concerns with environmentalists worldwide, who see the Amazon’s preservation as vital in the fight to halt global warming. Credit: Ueslei Marcelino (REUTERS)
