Aomori resort breaks Japan's snowfall record

Sukayu, a hot spring resort area in Aomori Prefecture in northeastern Japan, on Feb. 25, 2013, registers the largest snowfall ever recorded among currently existing observatories in Japan, according to the weather agency. As of 11 a.m. that day, 550 centimeters of snow had piled up, breaking the previous record logged in the same area the day before, amid the onset of a wintry weather system sweeping across the northeastern Tohoku region. The figure rose to 555 cm at 4 p.m.
