世界の天文学者が結集して南米チリの標高５千メートルのアタカマ高地に建設した「アルマ望遠鏡」の主要部が完成した。アンデス山中から世界最高の"視力"により宇宙の謎に迫る電波望遠鏡で、本格運用の始まりを記念して１３日午後（日本時間１４日未明）、開所式が執り行われた。

Alma telescope inaugurated in Chilean Andes

A ceremony is held marking the inauguration of the state-of-the-art Alma radio telescope, built with the collaboration of astronomers from around the world on an Andean plateau 5,000 meters above sea level in northern Chile on March 13, 2013. Funded by Japan, the United States and major European countries, the gigantic telescope is intended to capture radio waves from outer space with dozens of parabola antennas working in synchrony to function as a radio telescope.
