ゆったりと温泉につかるニホンザルたちのユニークな姿が人気を集める長野県山ノ内町の地獄谷野猿公苑が１９６４年にオープンして今年５０周年を迎える。サル専用の露天風呂で雪の中、サルが温泉でくつろぐ姿は「スノーモンキー」と海外メディアで紹介され、外国からも多くの観光客が訪れている。
Japanese macaques soak in an outdoor hot spring pool at the Jigokudani monkey park in Nagano Prefecture in January 2014. The sight of the "snow monkeys" at the hot spring during winter is popular among tourists. Of the around 130,000 visitors to the park in fiscal 2012, about 30,000 were from abroad. The park marks the 50th anniversary of its opening in 2014.
