防衛省は２２日、鹿児島県・奄美群島の無人島、江仁屋離島で、陸上自衛隊の離島防衛専門部隊、西部方面普通科連隊（長崎県佐世保市）が、海上自衛隊の艦艇からボートで上陸する離島奪還訓練を報道陣に公開した。日中両国の緊張関係が続くなか、防衛省は南西諸島の無人島を使う訓練により、離島防衛の強化をアピールするのが狙い。

Ground Self-Defense Force personnel trained to protect the country's remote islands conduct a landing exercise on an uninhabited island in the Amami Islands chain in southwestern Japan on May 22, 2014, with a group of reporters given access to the drill. The amphibious exercise was held as the Chinese and Russian navies conducted a joint drill the same day in the East China Sea, where Japan and China are involved in a territorial dispute over a group of uninhabited islands administered by Japan but claimed by China.
