列島の大動脈として暮らしや経済を支え続けてきた東海道新幹線（東京―新大阪）が１日、開業５０年を迎えた。ＪＲ東京駅や名古屋駅など各駅で記念出発式が開かれた。「夢の超特急」として、東京五輪開幕直前の６４年１０月１日に開業。これまで延べ５６億人が乗り、走行した距離は地球５万周に当たる約２０億キロに達した。

Japan's shinkansen bullet trains marked 50 years of service on Oct. 1, 2014, with the milestone celebrated in ceremonies held at major stations, including Tokyo and Nagoya. Since the start of services between Tokyo and Osaka on Oct. 1, 1964, nine days before the opening of the Tokyo Olympics, the Tokaido Shinkansen Line has carried a total of 5.6 billion passengers with trains traveling a cumulative 2 billion kilometers, the equivalent of 50,000 trips around the Earth.
