岐阜県白川村の白川郷で９日、世界文化遺産に登録されている合掌造り集落の火災に備えた一斉放水訓練があった。紅葉に彩られた山々を背景に、かやぶき屋根を越えて高さ約３０メートルまで達した水が放物線を描いた。

Columns of water are discharged over traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses during an annual water-discharge drill in the village of Shirakawa in the central Japan prefecture of Gifu on Nov. 9, 2014. The Shirakawa-go and neighboring Gokayama regions were declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1995 for their farmhouses' steep thatched roofs designed to withstand the large amount of heavy snow in winter.
