110年動き続ける、ウール織機の音色とリズム＝＝。
ションヘル織機は、筬（おさ）で整えたたて糸に対し、よこ糸が入ったシャトル（杼・ひ）が往復することによってウールを織っていく織機です。日本では大正から昭和中期にかけて全国的に普及し、国民の被服環境を格段に充実させた立役者ですが、現在では高速で織れる織機にその場を奪われ、国内で見られる台数は数えられる程度とされています。

スーツの世界三大産地のひとつ、イギリス中部の地方都市、ハダースフィールドで、この時代遅れの機械と出会う機会がありました。
コンピューターでプログラミング制御された現在の織機は、超高速でたて糸とよこ糸を織り込んでいくため、一般人の目にその仕組みは「魔術化」されたように映ります。電子レンジとおなじで、なぜできあがるかわからない。使っている利器の仕組みがわからないことを、落合陽一氏は「現代の魔術化」と読んでいますが、まさにその通りのことが織機でも起きているのです。

しかし、1910年から動き続けるこの「DEBCROSS　LOOM」は、ひとつひとつのボディ、フレーム、油圧、糸、ペダル、歯車が人体模型のような温かみを有し、そのオイル臭のなかに、産業革命の残り香さえかぐことができそうな気がします。現代の超高速織機は、生産性に優れている一方、ウールという生地の性質である「空気含有率」を削ってしまうリスクがあります。超高速で織られるためにたて糸とよこ糸に圧力がかかることで、空気が押し出され、保温性をそいでしまうのです。また、生地にストレスがかかるのため、独特の風合いも色あせるという指摘もあります。

その点、オールドファッションのこの織機は、メンテナンスもふくめ「手間と暇」を要しますが、低速で織られるために手仕事のぬくもりと風合いを宿すのです。110年間休むことなく往復するリズムにしばし、耳を傾けていると、日々のうたかたから解き放たれる心地がします。

なにか大事なことを語りかけてくるような、大きなのっぽの古織機。これから先もそのリズムを刻み続けてほしいと切に願います。

In Huddersfield, one of the world's three major production areas for suits, a regional city in central England, I had the opportunity to meet this outdated machine.
Today's looms, which are programmed and controlled by computers, weave ultra-high-speed warp yarns and weft yarns, so the mechanism appears to be "magicalized" to the general public.

However, the "DEBCROSS LOOM", which has been moving since 1910, has the warmth that each body, frame, oil pressure, thread, pedal, and gear have a human model-like warmth, and among the oil odors, even the incense of the industrial revolution I feel like I can do it. Modern ultra-high speed looms are excellent in productivity, but at the same time have a risk of cutting off the "air content" which is the property of wool fabric. Pressure is applied to the warp and weft yarns so that they can be woven at an ultra high speed, so the air is pushed out and the warmth is kept. In addition, it is also pointed out that because the fabric is stressed, the unique texture also fades.

In that respect, this old fashion loom takes time and effort as well as maintenance, but it retains the warmth and texture of handwork because it is woven at low speeds. It's a rhythm that goes back and forth without a break for 110 years, and if you listen to it, it feels like it's released from the daily life.
