庭に榧（かや）の実を見つけました。
榧（かや）は、イチイ科カヤ属の常緑針葉樹です。
存在する榧の木は世界で7種。
中国に4種、アメリカに2種、そして日本に1種です。
その日本在来種の榧は、本州中南部から四国、屋久島などのごく一部に生育しています。
中には樹高20ｍ、周囲3ｍに達する樹齢千年超の古木も存在しますが、成長が極めて遅く、直径1.1mほどの成木になるまで三百年もかかり、生育も困難なため、今ではほぼ絶滅してしまいました。

榧の実は果実ではなく、種実（ナッツ）に分類されます。果肉に似た緑の外種皮を取り除くと、固い殻に覆われた種子が現れ、アク抜きして乾燥させることで食用となります。縄文時代の各地の遺跡からは、クルミや栗、ドングリなどの木の実とともに榧の実も出土していることから、古来より食されていました。

I found the fruit of Kaya in the garden.
Kaya is an evergreen conifer of the genus Torreya of the Yew family.
There are seven species of Torreya trees in the world.
There are 4 species in China, 2 species in the United States, and 1 species in Japan.
The native Japanese species, Torreya nucifer, grows in a small part of Honshu, Shikoku, and Yakushima.
Some old trees are over 1000 years old and reach a height of 20 m and a circumference of 3 m, but they grow extremely slowly, and it takes 300 years to grow to a mature tree with a diameter of about 1.1 m, making it difficult to grow. It's almost extinct.

Torreya nucifer is not a fruit, but a nut. When the green outer seed coat, which resembles the pulp, is removed, seeds covered with a hard shell appear, and the seeds are edible by removing the lye and drying. It has been eaten since ancient times because it has been excavated from various archaeological sites during the Jomon period, along with nuts such as walnuts, chestnuts, and acorns.
